By 2N3904 vs 2N2222 3408
Both transistors are NPN type (a kind of bipolar junction transistor). The 2N3904 comes only in a TO-92 package (about 4.3×4.3 mm in size). The 2N2222 offers two types: TO-18 metal package and TO-92 plastic package.
The TO-18 has a round metal case (diameter 5.3 mm). It works better in high-temperature environments, but it takes up more PCB (printed circuit board) space.
The 2N2222 supports up to 800 mA collector current, which is four times more than the 2N3904. However, the TO-18 version of 2N2222 has power dissipation (Pd) of only 500 mW (metal case version can reach 1.5 W).
Note that the 2N3904 has a gain-bandwidth product (fT) of 300 MHz, which is 20% higher than the 2N2222. This gives it an advantage in RF (radio frequency) circuit designs.
| Key Parameter | 2N3904 | 2N2222 |
| Max Current (Ic) | 200 mA | 800 mA |
| Voltage Rating (Vce) | 40 V | 40 V |
| Typical Power (Pd) | 625 mW | 500 mW / 1.5 W |
| Gain-Bandwidth (fT) | 300 MHz | 250 MHz |
At 10 mA current, the hFE (DC gain) of 2N3904 is 100. This is 33% higher than 2N2222.
However, when the current reaches 150 mA, the 2N2222 still keeps a gain of 75. The 2N3904 goes beyond its rated current range at this point.
The Vce(sat) (saturation voltage) comparison. At 10 mA, the 2N3904 only drops 0.2 V. But the 2N2222 shows a 1.0 V drop at 500 mA load.
This means in a 5V power system, the 2N2222 loses 20% voltage efficiency.

When the ambient temperature exceeds 85°C, its hFE drops by 40% (see Figure 4 temperature drift curve).
At 12V and 150mA continuous operation, its junction temperature reaches the 150°C limit within 3 minutes.
The TO-18 version has thermal resistance of 200°C/W. At 500 mA, it allows only 30% duty cycle (see Figure 5 duty cycle chart).
For continuous use, you must upgrade to the TO-3 package.

The 2N3904, a widely-used NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT), is commonly employed in electronic circuits for applications such as amplification, switching, and various general-purpose functions. Its versatility makes it a fundamental component in numerous electronic systems.
When substituting the 2N3904 with a 2N222, ensure that the operating voltage remains below 30 V and power dissipation does not exceed 350 mW. For contemporary applications, the 2N3904 is generally preferred due to its greater commercial availability and enhanced reliability in modern circuit implementations.
The 2N2222, an NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT), is extensively utilized in electronic applications for its adaptable functionality, cost-effectiveness, and dependable performance. Its widespread adoption stems from these key attributes in circuit design.
The 2N3904 transistor offers flexible functionality with its low-power design, serving effectively in signal amplification applications, low-current device regulation, and the implementation of basic radio frequency systems. Its adaptable nature makes it particularly suitable for handling delicate signal enhancement tasks and managing electronic components with minimal power requirements.
